Sometimes in life, we just feel a little bit stuck, or directionless. It’s not that there’s necessarily even anything WRONG, it just doesn’t feel RIGHT. This often happens when we’ve lost connection with what is important to us, what we’re passionate about, who we really are as people. When we feel stuck in a rut, this can often impact our mental health. The course looks at ways to manage or change your emotional state – your mind and your body are connected, if you change one, you change the other. We explore this connection and look at how changing your body position, the language you use, the way you think about something, the way you walk; can impact the way you feel about yourself. (Please note this course is not a substitute for professional help if that’s what is needed, but it can sit nicely alongside counselling, medication or one-to-one coaching.)

This is where I was when I first did my NLP Diploma – in a stressful job, having lost the love for it, and just generally feeling a bit lacklustre, a bit ‘meh.’ The problem was I didn’t really know what I wanted to do differently! After 4 days on my NLP Diploma, I had written my letter of resignation and significantly developed ideas for my own business combining the 2 things I’m passionate about, helping others, and mountains. There’s so many ways NLP can help our personal relationships – so I’ve split this topic into 2 sections. Read my previous post for an intro into how NLP can help important relationships.

Many of our participants come wanting to improve the communication with someone they love. Some of the NLP techniques are specifically designed around managing relationships.

Key to improving your relationships is the knowledge that you actually can’t change anyone else (as much as you may REALLY want to) - you can only change the way you react to the situation and the way you show up in the relationship. Every relationship is built on rapport, and this is often at its strongest in family relationships – its how we can have a blazing argument and still be friends again by bedtime. When a relationship feels challenging, it’s the first thing to build back up. Understanding HOW rapport works, and how you can strength this further will improve every important relationship.

Disagreements and arguments are common in relationships, but it doesn’t always need to turn into a row. A simple phrase such as ‘what would you like me to do differently’ rather than a defence, or an argument, or flat out denial, can save hours of arguments, and may even save a relationship. We explore this and other phrases - we look at how you can give feedback or input into a conversation that encourages the other person to listen, and also how you can ask for feedback (and listen to it) instead of jumping to defence.

Although our family are often where we can be most open with our emotions, sometimes being able to manage your emotional state, for example, when dealing with a tantrummy toddler, or challenging teenager, or even the cliché difficult mother-in-law; can allow you to appear calm, confident and in control. This allows you to continue to be a ‘safe’ place for your children to open up to and to keep a clear head to maintain your own boundaries and priorities. State management is a huge part of NLP.

So often we think that everyone else understands things, processes information and thinks the same way as us – we don’t even consider that there may be a different way of doing it as we assume everyone is wired the same. In fact, there are many different ways of taking in information and processing it in your brain – you may have a visual preference, auditory preference, kinaesthetic preference, or even an auditory digital preference. Have you ever wondered why your partner can’t remember what you told them verbally yesterday but can bring up the exact contents of a Whatsapp argument from 4 years ago? This would indicate your partner has a much strong preference for visually written information than for auditory information. The realisation that my partner was experiencing and remembering events in an entirely different way to me was a game changer in our relationship!

Our personal relationships are the most important relationships in our lives. From our parents, to our partner, to our kids, how we communicate and maintain those relationships can be the difference between misery, arguments and feeling unloved; or contentment, harmony and feeling valued and supported. This has a huge impact on our happiness, and that of those around us.

Partners - Whether its little niggly things like how your partner loads the dishwasher, or folds their pants, to the bigger differences like where to live or whether to have kids or not, being able to communicate effectively with your partner is incredibly important.

Parents - Our parents can be the ones that bring out the worst in us, or have that ability to not just touch a nerve, but stamp all over it. They can make us feel defensive, or we find ourselves agreeing to something we don’t want to do just to keep the peace. Finding a way to hold our own boundaries and manage our emotional state can really help.

Kids - Children can push all sorts of boundaries – being able to manage our emotional state and stay calm is important. Kids are constantly changing and developing – sometimes, stepping into their shoes can help us to manage our expectations and appreciate their perspective. From a communication perspective, being able to talk so they will listen, and also being able to listen so they will talk, is vital – we are our children’s world, their safety net, their comfort and their main source of knowledge.

Let’s face it, we all secretly like to do the ‘which type are you’ personality questionnaires online or magazines. Humans have a desire to understand themselves better.
 
The NLP Diploma focuses a lot on understanding people – initially from a personal perspective and understanding yourself, but with the knowledge that other people, therefore, may be different from you. By learning how we take in information, process it and make meaning from it, we can then choose how we want to learn things, how we communicate, and gain understanding as to why we may find somethings easy, or challenging. We can then learn ways to adapt and flex what we do to make things easier, be more successful and communicate more effectively.
 
We also run a large number of patterns – behaviours, habits, ways of reacting – that can either help us, or hinder us. Too often, we dismiss these as 'just the way I am’ and feel we are stuck with these habits. I’ll admit, NLP is one of the worst-named things ever. No-one seems to know what it stands for, or means (Neuro-Linguistic Programming – which means very little to anyone, and sounds like something to do with computers!) So let me break it down for you.

What actually it is?
NLP is a type of coaching, personal development and for some, a way of being. It is used in many different fields, including:

• personal development
• communication training
• business/executive coaching
• sales
• sports coaching (including being used by Olympians)
• entertainment (think Derren Brown among others)
• life coaching
• mediation
• therapy, including PTSD/depression/anxiety/stress/trauma
• health and wellbeing
• presentation/speaker training
• relationship coaching
• addiction treatment

The Name - Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Neuro – NLP looks at what goes in inside your head – how your brain receives and processes information and how this impacts your personality, memories, behaviour and experience. It also affects how we communicate with others, and how sometimes we can experience exactly the same event but come away with completely different memories of it.

Linguistic – the words we use, both with others and in our internal dialogue have a huge impact on our happiness and success. When we make small changes to the language we use, it can make huge differences to our impact in the world. Linguistics also looks at our body language and how we can position ourselves to feel more confident, more powerful, more friendly, more of anything you want!

Programming – as human beings, we run off a number of ‘programmes’ – ways of doing things that are repeated time and again. We will have programmes for tasks such as brushing our teeth, making a cup of tea, driving a car. We also run programmes for emotions, like how we do anger, or sadness or joy. Our programmes are our habits – when they serve us well, great – nothing needs to change. However, we all have some habits that are not serving us and NLP can help change these. (from biting nails to taking things too personally to comfort eating, and everything in between, NLP can help.)
