Winter Skills Courses
This course is suitable for those new to winter walking or wanting to refresh and improve their safety skills. The skills covered are essential knowledge for anyone venturing into the Scottish Highlands in snow cover, including:
- safe footwork on snow
- use of an ice-axe
- stopping a slip or a slide
- using crampons
- basic avalanche awareness
The course covers winter walking techniques. It does not cover any winter climbing techniques.
The Winter Skills course is normally run on Ben Vorlich, near Lochearnhead, within 1 hour 15 minutes of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. The course is, of course, dependent on snow conditions to run.
The course cost £75 per person for 1 day.
Courses for 2021 are currently uncertain due to the current COVID restrictions (and of course unknown snow cover.) They may be organised at very short notice, with the possibility of running in the Pentlands if there is enough suitable snow.

Navigation Courses
Our navigation courses are run in the Pentland Hills, close to Edinburgh. (Other locations can be organised upon request.)
The Foundations of Navigation course is suitable for those who have no, or limited, experience of map reading and navigation, or who want to refresh their skills. It covers the basics of reading maps, contours, using a compass and navigating your route in good weather.
The course is very practical and takes place entirely in the outdoors, so you are learning the skills in the environment you will be using them, rather than based in a classroom.
During the course, participants will have the opportunity to learn some of the theory of navigation and to practice their skills during a ‘leg’ where they take the rest of a group to a location. When not leading a ‘leg,’ they can practice their skills to keep track of where the leader is taking them.
Courses cost £75 per person for a 1-day course. Maximum 1:6 ratio.
